both at St. Leonards Hall, Richings Park.
Having had the privilege of producing Michael Palin’s Weekend last year I am very happy to return to direct the Players in another highly entertaining play.
Imagine the potential chaos which might ensue if the Village Hall was over-booked one evening, by not just one, but for several disparate groups of people – all expecting to use the hall for their chosen activity – whether it be badminton, table tennis, panto rehearsal or the visiting speaker with slide show.
This the setting for Peter Gordon’s hilarious comedy about village life and the woes which beset the highly strung vicar’s wife, whose responsibility it is to make the bookings and be of general help and support to her husband Donald. This play will have you spotting local characters and familiar situations, but while the fun is thick and fast, no one is really hurt by all the machinations and indeed some come off rather well.
You will be alternately bemused, entertained and appalled by the behaviour of ordinary folk when put under pressure and you can be assured of a really fun night out with the members of this archetypal village community.
There are a minimum of eight speaking parts, for a wide range of ages and much will depend upon who plays the characters.
There is Helen Beever, the local Guide captain, with a strong sense of purpose (25-45)
Evonne Duckworth, the willing but highly-strung Vicar’s wife (25+ years)
Sue Dixon – a local keep fit enthusiast and loyal friend of the Enfields (20 – 40years)
Kath Enfield – long suffering wife of Bob Enfield (30+ years)
Bob Enfield – whose interest in Badminton may be its escape value from ‘the wife’.
Wayne Bryant – young ‘Jack the Lad’ who sees himself as a lady-killer but just cant make it. (17 – 20 years)
Leonard Trotter – a railway enthusiast and local speaker, with an endless supply of slides on his favourite topic (40+ years)
David Wright – the local off-duty policeman, who fancies himself as a bit of a sportsman (30+ years)
Linda Hammond – whom Kath sees as a rival for Bob’s affection, but actually she finds most men attractive. (20+ years)
